FedNor invests over $1.6 million to boost tourism in Greater Sudbury and the surrounding regions

Viviane Lapointe, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, today announced a FedNor investment of $1,612,589 to help maximize the economic potential of Northeastern Ontario’s tourism industry. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.

Tourism initiatives supported by FedNor

Municipality of Killarney
$917,654

A FedNor investment of $917,654 will help the Municipality of Killarney strengthen and expand the municipal wharf to improve safety, create economic opportunities and fuel tourism development. The project will include removing the existing structure and constructing a new Killarney Municipal Wharf at a higher elevation to ensure its long-term stability, while creating growth opportunities for the community. Once complete, the new wharf will allow safe docking for cruise vessels and provide additional deck space for tourism ventures such as vendor markets, entertainment, and more. It will also include a public boat launch, more docking for transient visitors and enhanced services for local businesses and tourism operators like fishing charters and boat tours. 

Whitefish River First Nation
$279,000

Whitefish River First Nation is receiving a FedNor investment of $279,000 to help expand and further develop the waterfront at the community owned Hilly Acres Campground. Specifically, the funding will be used to construct a new boardwalk to improve access to 32 boat slips on the Whitefish River. Once complete, this strategic initiative will strengthen community competitiveness through access to Lake Huron and pave the way for the future expansion of the Hilly Acres Camp & Trailer Park.

Wahnapitae First Nation
$224,435

A FedNor investment of $224,435 helped upgrade the Wahnapitae First Nation’s Pow-Wow grounds. Provided through the Tourism Growth Program, this funding was used to construct an arbour with outdoor seating to host community gatherings and cultural events. The funding was also used to develop and equip an outdoor seating area with benches, seating platforms and shading structures, to address comfort, accessibility and capacity. Identified as a local priority, the project also supported upgrades to areas surrounding the arbour including landscaping, pathways, decorative stone and foliage.

Walden Cross Country
$80,000

To help the Walden Cross Country attract large-scale events and more visitors to the region, FedNor invested $80,000 to help the organization purchase a large trail groomer. The new groomer will be more energy efficient, produce lower emissions and help extend ski season. In addition, this new equipment is helping to pave the way for the ski club to host provincial racing events and secure its designation as one of only four premier racing sites in Ontario based on trail width and climb, grooming, volunteers and qualified race officials and facilities.

Kivi Park Community Foundation
$57,500

The Kivi Park Community Foundation is receiving a FedNor investment of $57,500 to hire a youth intern for an 18-month period. In addition to creating youth employment, the funding will help this not-for-profit organization create strategic alliances, secure more sponsorships, and further develop its tourism offering to encourage more outdoor enthusiasts from outside the region to visit Greater Sudbury.

Temagami Outpost
$54,000

To help attract more tourists to Northern Ontario, FedNor is investing $54,000 to help the Temagami Outpost modernize its off-grid operations and become an all-season resort. Specifically, the funding will support new tourism experiences, facility upgrades, equipment purchases, accommodation enhancements and marketing to promote this regional gem in domestic and international markets
