Online payments: rights and responsibilities
Canada’s banks have agreed to be bound by a voluntary code of conduct that offers consumers some protection for online payments. Under this code, Canadian banks agree to apply the principles and provisions of the Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Debit Card Services.
If you have an account at a financial institution other than a bank, check your account agreement or ask the institution for information on its consumer protection policies for online payments.
What you should do if you feel your rights are not being respected
If you feel that a federally regulated financial institution is not respecting your rights, contact the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.
