Rivière-au-Renard, Quebec - The Government of Canada is announcing $4,531,375 in funding for 47 projects in Quebec that will help improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of Quebec’s fish and seafood sector.
The five-year Quebec Fisheries Fund (QFF) supports projects in the areas of innovation, science partnerships, commercial fisheries, aquaculture and processing. These projects increase the value of high quality fish and seafood products from sustainable sources, and help position Quebec’s fish and seafood sector for continued long term growth.
The combined contributions of the federal and provincial governments in the QFF will total $42.8 million in investments, which will create opportunities and increase the market value of high quality fish and seafood products from sustainable practices in Quebec.
“The Quebec Fisheries Fund is an important economic lever for the communities that rely on the sustainable development of the fish and seafood sector. Over the last three years, this collaboration between the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec helped grow Quebec companies while promoting their high-quality products across Canada and worldwide.”
The Honourable Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
“The fish and seafood sector is at the heart of the economy of Gaspésie and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The investments announced today will allow businesses to develop and innovate while contributing to the protection and sustainability of the sector, not only in the region, but also in the province, and thus contributing to Canada's economic growth.”
The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, Member of Parliament for Gaspésie—Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine
In the Gaspé – Lower St. Lawrence region, the Government of Canada's contribution, totaling more than $1.5 million, supports 26 projects.
In the Magdalen Islands, nearly $1.5 million is allocated to five projects.
As for the North Shore, the contribution amounts to nearly $1 million and supports 13 projects.
Finally, an investment of more than $300,000 is allocated to three projects outside the Maritimes, in Lingwick, Quebec City and Montreal.
By working together to stimulate innovation and support the development of Quebec's seafood and aquaculture harvesting and processing sector, the governments of Canada and Quebec are helping to create and maintain good jobs for Quebec's middle class.
