The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will welcome James Cleverly, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, to Toronto, Ontario, on January 18, 2023.

During the visit, the ministers will discuss ways to advance transatlantic security cooperation, particularly in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Ministers Joly and Cleverly will also discuss the importance of maintaining pressure on the Russian regime in response to its illegal invasion, notably through coordination on sanctions, as well as accountability efforts to ensure that perpetrators of war crimes are held responsible. They will also discuss global issues of mutual interest, such as their enhanced engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, which is critically important for the long-term prosperity, health and security of Canadians and central to addressing challenges related to global stability and climate change.

This visit will build on the already profound and historic relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom and will reaffirm our countries’ commitment to promoting common values, such as preserving and promoting the rules-based international order.
