Minister Ng launches public consultations on Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity
March 27, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, announced the launch of public consultations on Canada’s negotiations with the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP).
Initiated by the United States, APEP is a new framework for cooperation across the Americas. The partnership includes 12 APEP partners committed to working together to advance mutual interests by strengthening regional competitiveness and supply chain resiliency, as well as by promoting shared prosperity, and inclusive and sustainable development and investment.
Canadians and interested stakeholders can participate in these consultations until May 9, 2023. Submissions received from these consultations will help define Canada’s priorities in potential APEP negotiations.
“APEP can play an important role in supporting economic recovery, energy and food security, and in the strengthening of supply chains for critical minerals. Canada will work closely with the U.S. and other APEP participants to shape this initiative and to promote inclusive trade that protects the economic prosperity of participating countries in the Americas.”
- Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development
U.S. President Joe Biden announced APEP in June 2022 on the margins of the Summit of the Americas.
APEP partners are Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States and Uruguay.
All participating countries of APEP signed the Joint Declaration on the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity on January 27, 2023.
In April 2023, Minister Ng will travel to Chile for an in-market trade mission that will explore sustainable business opportunities in Chile’s clean technology sector.
