The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, today spoke with Albert M. Muchanga, African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry and Mining.

During the meeting, Minister Ng and Commissioner Muchanga discussed the inaugural Canada-African Union Commission High-Level Dialogue, which took place in October 2022. The high-level dialogue provided an important forum to discuss top priorities for both Canada and Africa, including the development of the Canada-Africa Economic Cooperation Strategy and a commitment to explore economic engagement, trade and investment opportunities. The Minister and the Commissioner also discussed work underway to develop the strategy, which will help advance shared interests and build a stronger economic partnership between Canada and Africa.

They also expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming inaugural Canada-African Union Commission Trade Policy Dialogue, which will be held in Ottawa next month. The trade policy dialogue will be a valuable tool for building a robust and comprehensive partnership between Canada and the African Union, as well as diversifying and expanding Canada’s trade relationship with the African continent.
