May 12, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will welcome Alfred Mutua, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, to Canada from May 11 to 16, 2023.

Minister Joly looks forward to welcoming her Kenyan counterpart to Canada to continue to build on priorities shared by the two countries that were discussed during her recent visit to Kenya which concluded on May 2, and included supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan.

The minister and the Cabinet Secretary will meet in Montréal, Quebec, on May 14 to further deepen the two countries’ cooperation on shared international peace and security priorities, such as in the Horn of Africa and Haiti, the importance of a fully implemented ceasefire in Sudan leading to a return to democratic transition, as well as collaborating to strengthen the rules-based international order. They will also discuss advancing shared priorities on climate change.

This first official visit by the Cabinet Secretary takes place as the two countries celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations later this year. This important milestone demonstrates Canada and Kenya’s strong and multifaceted partnership, which is founded on a shared interest in gender equality, trade and investment, and human rights. Minister Joly looks forward to continuing to strengthen this partnership during Cabinet Secretary Mutua’s visit.
