Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, met with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the United Kingdom House of Commons.

Minister Ng and Speaker Hoyle discussed the historic and strong people-to-people ties between Canada and the U.K. and the two countries’ shared focus on increasing trade in areas like critical minerals and cleantech while expanding cooperation in science, technology, innovation and defence.

Minister Ng conveyed her support for the timely and successful completion of the process to welcome the U.K. into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The minister noted the progress and work underway between Canada and the U.K. to support open, predictable and inclusive rules-based trade and to facilitate U.K. market access for safe and high-quality Canadian agricultural products, with a particular focus on beef and pork.

Minister Ng reaffirmed Canada's commitment to reaching a high-standard and ambitious free trade agreement (FTA) with the U.K. that reflects the unique bilateral trade relationship and delivers ambitious outcomes for small- and medium-sized businesses, digital trade and the environment.

Minister Ng also reiterated the Government of Canada’s readiness to conclude a social security agreement with the U.K. to ensure that British pensioners living in Canada receive the benefits to which they are entitled, regardless of where they live.
