Statement following Iran’s application against Canada at the International Court of Justice

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement:  

‘‘Canada is currently analyzing Iran’s application and will take the appropriate next steps as per the International Court of Justice’s procedures.

“Canada takes its international legal obligations seriously. We strongly believe in the role of the International Court of Justice as a crucial platform for the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law.

‘‘That is why we are profoundly disappointed by Iran’s complete disregard for human life and human rights of its own brutal and repressive regime. 

“Canada will always stand by and strongly support the victims of terrorism. Iran must stop supporting terrorism and inciting violence and instability in the region and beyond. We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran as they call on the regime to respect their human rights and freedoms, as well as their ability to live and prosper in a society free from state-sponsored fear, suppression and intimidation.”
