Minister Hussen to travel to Kenya and Zambia

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today announced that he will visit Kenya and Zambia from September 4 to 9, 2023.

During his visits, Minister Hussen will engage with various officials on shared priorities such as climate action; sustainable economies; education; food and nutrition security; sexual and reproductive health and rights; advancing gender equality; and ending child, early and forced marriage.

In Kenya and Zambia, Minister Hussen will visit Canada-funded projects and participate in meetings with government officials, development partners and stakeholders. In Kenya, he will also attend the inaugural Africa Climate Summit to highlight Canada’s development assistance and climate-finance leadership in nature-based solutions for climate action. More specifically, Canada’s support for the blue economy and the sustainable use of water resources for economic prosperity in Africa.

  • The Africa Climate Summit, championed by Kenya’s President William Samoei Ruto, aims to address the increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs, both globally and, particularly, in Africa.

  • In fiscal year 2020 to 2021, Canada provided $99.4 million in international assistance to Kenya. Canada’s international assistance is well aligned with Kenya’s overarching strategy: Kenya Vision 2030.

  • In fiscal year 2020 to 2021, Canada provided $30 million in international assistance to Zambia. This assistance is well aligned with Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan.

  • As part of Canada’s climate commitment of $5.3 billion in funding, its Partnering for Climate initiative (to which $315 million has been allocated) aims to support people, communities and countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in becoming more resilient to climate change through the use of nature-based solutions that include biodiversity co-benefits. The initiative includes $39.3 million in funding for projects in Kenya.
