News release

September 13, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced a matching fund with the Canadian Red Cross to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of disaster-affected populations in Morocco. Every donation made by individuals to the Canadian Red Cross from September 8 to 28, 2023, will be matched up to a maximum of $3 million.

These funds, raised through the generosity of Canadians, will help the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement deliver life-saving services, such as emergency food and nutrition assistance, the provision of emergency cash and vouchers and necessary water, sanitation and health services, in Morocco.

An additional $2 million will also be allocated to support the immediate needs of those affected by this crisis, bringing the total of Canada’s response to $5 million.

Global Affairs Canada continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with Moroccan authorities and humanitarian partners to assess and respond to evolving needs.
