Canada provides additional funding for humanitarian assistance in Gaza Strip and neighbouring areas

News release

October 21, 2023 – Cairo, Egypt – Global Affairs Canada

Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced that Canada is providing $50 million in funding for humanitarian assistance to address acute needs of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and neighbouring areas, while ensuring that none of the money goes into the hands of Hamas. This funding will help provide food, water, emergency medical assistance, protection services and other life-saving assistance.

Canada remains steadfast in its call for compliance with international humanitarian law. The safety and well-being of civilians must be a top priority. Canada continues to urge all parties to actively facilitate the rapid, sustained and unimpeded access of essential humanitarian relief to civilians in need, underscoring our collective responsibility to uphold the principles of humanity, dignity and protection for all.

“The critical and immediate needs of civilians affected by the crisis become clearer with each day that goes by. As Canada’s partners make their growing needs known, this new assistance will allow us to provide them funding quickly so they can scale up their efforts to help people in urgent need.”

“It is critical that Palestinian civilians in Gaza who need life-saving assistance receive it as soon as possible. Canada will continue to work with its trusted and experienced humanitarian partners to make sure this funding reaches those who are suffering.”
