The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will welcome Margus Tsahkna, Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Ottawa on October 20, 2023.

“Canada and Estonia have had strong bilateral relations for decades, and I am looking forward to welcoming Minister Tsahkna to Ottawa to identify opportunities for our two countries to expand our cooperation both bilaterally and through international forums.”

• Canada and Estonia enjoy strong bilateral relations, based on strong people-to-people ties and shared fundamental values including support for democracy, human rights the rule of law, and the rules-based international system. Canada has long supported Estonia’s sovereignty and independence.

• In September 2023, the Honourable Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the Tallinn Digital Summit in Estonia. The meeting brought together leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss important digital issues that societies face amid the global challenges of the 21st century - including strengthening democracies, cybersecurity, and the increasing impact of artificial intelligence.

• Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Estonia reached a total value of $187 million in 2022: Canadian merchandise exports to Estonia amounted to $28.7 million while Canadian merchandise imports from Estonia reached $158.3 million.
