Minister Joly welcomes Iraq’s Foreign Affairs Minister to Ottawa

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will welcome Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, to Canada on March 18, 2024.

The ministers will meet to discuss ways to enhance the growing Canada-Iraq relationship, including through diplomatic engagement and cooperation bilaterally and multilaterally, and expansion of bilateral trade.

During the visit, Minister Joly and Minister Hussein will also engage on peace and security challenges in the Middle East, including their countries’ respective efforts to counter Daesh through the Global Coalition Against Daesh. Minister Joly will seek Minister Hussein’s views on the country’s efforts to combat climate change.

  • Bilateral trade between Canada and Iraq amounts to a value of more than $378 million annually. Canadian exports to Iraq belong largely to four key sectors: agriculture and agrifood, oil and gas, health and life science, and renewable energy.

  • Canada and Iraq are members of the Global Coalition Against Daesh. Canada has allocated over $4.7 billion since 2016 in military, security, stabilization, humanitarian and development assistance in responding to the crises in Syria and Iraq.
