Yesterday, The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, met with Robert Habeck, Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, on the margins of the G7 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, which was held in Italy on July 16 and 17, 2024.

Minister Ng noted the importance of strengthening the multilateral trading system and discussing supply chain resilience and economic security issues with other G7 partners.

Minister Ng and Vice-Chancellor Habeck emphasized the importance of continuing the strong support to Ukraine in the context of Russia’s unjustifiable and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine.

In addition, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the “green energy transition,” including through the Canada-Germany Energy Partnership. Minister Ng also highlighted the importance that Canada places on Canada and Germany’s relationship, especially as trusted and reliable trading partners. She reiterated Canada's commitment to establishing a “bilateral window” through Germany’s H2Global Foundation to help coordinate supply- and demand-side auctions for contracts for clean Canadian hydrogen.

Minister Ng also noted that preparations are underway for Canada’s role as Partner Country at Hannover Messe 2025. Hannover Messe is the world’s leading trade show for industrial technology, and will be held in Hannover, Germany, from March 31 to April 4, 2025.

In conclusion, Minister Ng and Vice-Chancellor Habeck agreed to continue to foster a strong, inclusive and sustainable global recovery through ongoing collaboration.
