Backgrounder: Minister Ng announces significant support to help Canadian businesses succeed in Indonesia

From December 1 to 3, 2024, during the mission to Indonesia as part of the Team Canada Trade Mission to Indonesia and the Philippines, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, concluded the negotiations for a Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), and signed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) under CEPA. The minister also witnessed the signing of a number of MOUs between Canadian and Indonesian companies. These support Canada’s commitment under its Indo-Pacific Strategy to help Canadian businesses open doors in dynamic markets, unlock new opportunities and make connections in the Indo-Pacific region. They also help to further two-way trade, advance prosperity and support and create well-paying middle-class jobs for Canadians.
Conclusion of negotiations for a Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)
Description: On December 2, 2024, the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia concluded bilateral trade negotiations for the Canada-Indonesia CEPA. This important milestone in Canada’s long-standing relationship with Indonesia will provide further opportunities for Canadian businesses in one of the Indo-Pacific’s largest and most dynamic markets.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Indonesia—on Critical Minerals Cooperation and on the Establishment of a Bilateral Dialogue on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Issues
Description: As part of Canada and Indonesia CEPA negotiations, Canada and Indonesia signed an MOU on critical minerals, which establishes a bilateral dialogue to discuss cooperation in environmental, social and governance standards, among other areas. A second MOU was signed to establish a bilateral dialogue to continue cooperation on agricultural market access issues of mutual interest.
JBS Foods Canada and Indoguna Utama
Description: This MOU will help JBS, one of Canada’s largest beef companies, work with Indoguna Utama, the biggest beef supplier and distributor in Indonesia. JBS will be able to start exporting beef once all market conditions and Indonesia’s import market access requirements are met.
Proto Global Ltd. and TÜV NORD Indonesia
Description: This MOU will leverage TÜV Nord’s local expertise and trusted presence in Indonesia to introduce Proto Global’s artificial-intelligence-powered multilingual customer-experience solutions to businesses across Indonesia. The partnership aims to empower organizations with cutting-edge automation, enabling seamless communication in multiple languages, including Bahasa Indonesia.

Description: This MOU will help create greater collaboration between Canadian and Indonesian businesses working in key sectors.
The Business Council and the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO)
Description: This MOU will help create greater collaboration between Canadian and Indonesian businesses working in key sectors.
The Canada-ASEAN Business Council and the ASEAN Centre for Energy

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)
