Information Sharing Agreement Between Health Canada and the Alberta College of Pharmacy
With which third party is Health Canada sharing personal information
Under this Information Sharing Agreement, the Controlled Substances and Cannabis Branch (CSCB) at Health Canada (HC) shares personal information with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (the College). This two-way disclosure, determinate agreement came into effect on January 1, 2026, and ends on December 31, 2030. HC and the College will first review this agreement in January 2027, and every two years thereafter.
Why is Health Canada sharing personal information
HC administers the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and associated regulations, and in doing so maintains a database of loss and theft information, including loss and theft information relating to pharmacies in Alberta. The College is a professional regulatory college that maintains public registers on its website containing information about registered members and licensed pharmacies in Alberta.
To support their respective mandates, HC provides the College with loss and theft information collected under the CDSA in relation to pharmacies in Alberta, while the College provides HC with information from its public registers. The Agreement creates a framework for this reciprocal information sharing, supporting the College in governing and regulating pharmacy practice and operations in Alberta, and HC in administering the CDSA.
HC is authorized to collect, use and disclose personal information pursuant to the CDSA and the Privacy Act.
