Message from the Minister of Health - Family Doctor Week in Canada: November 6-11, 2017

Statements

I am pleased to recognize Family Doctor Week, which takes place from November 6-11. Family doctors do tremendous work to keep Canadians healthy, and they are vital to our country’s health care system. For many patients, their family doctor is the face of the Canadian health care system.

Family doctors will continue to be fundamental to our communities and health care system, especially given Canada’s aging population and increasing need for community-based care.

Family doctors are key partners in the Government of Canada’s efforts to improve our health care system so that it reflects the needs of all Canadians. We recognize that Canadians expect the health care system to adapt to their changing needs. That is why we have taken an active leadership role with provinces and territories to strengthen health care. In fact, earlier this year, federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health agreed to a Common Statement of Principles on Shared Health Priorities, which includes historic new investments in health care through Budget 2017, with $11 billion over 10 years in targeted funding for provinces and territories to improve access to mental health and addictions services, as well as for home and community care.

I thank the College of Family Physicians of Canada for their continued efforts to highlight and support family medicine. I thank all family doctors for their dedication and their contribution to keeping Canadians healthy.

Happy Family Doctor Week!

The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
