Response to Comments Received on PMRL Consultation for Phorate (PMRL2015-47)

Comment

A comment was received from India's Government [Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)] seeking a scientific justification for proposing phorate residue levels for all food crops (other than those listed in this item) at 0.024 ppm and requesting the risk assessment which was undertaken to support these MRLs' proposal.

PMRA Response

The 0.024 ppm MRLs, proposed to cover residues of total phorate residues in all food crops (other than potatoes and potato processed commodities) reflects the risks from exposure to total phorate residues from treated crops (other than potatoes), at the MRL levels established in exporting countries, exceeding PMRA's level of concern. Therefore, MRLs are being proposed for all non-registered uses in Canada at the quantitation limit of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) enforcement analytical method (0.008 ppm per analyte for a total of 0.024 ppm).

Details regarding the data that was reviewed by the PMRA in reaching a regulatory decision can be found in the corresponding Evaluation Report available in the Pesticides and Pest Management section of Health Canada's website, under Public Registry, Pesticide Product Information DatabaseFootnote 1.

As the comments received had no impact on the proposed MRLs, the phorate MRLs will be established as proposed in PMRL2015-47.
