Response to Comments Received on PMRL Consultation for Azoxystrobin (PMRL2016-07)

A comment was received requesting that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency clarify why there are 2 MRLs for poppy seeds: 38 ppm from EMRL2010-23 (24 September 2010) and 1 ppm, from PMRL2016-07).

PMRA Response

Following the review of the data that formed the basis of the poppy seed MRLs, it was noted that the 38 ppm MRL was based on the crop field trial data for spices, to permit the import and sale of the spices Crop Subgroup 19B (except black pepper), which includes poppy seeds.

The 1 ppm MRL was based on crop field trial data for rapeseed to support the registration of Exempla Fungicide™ (Registration Number 3205), containing technical grades azoxystrobin and difenoconazole, on the oilseed Crop Subgroup 20A, which includes poppy seeds.

In light of this (i.e., two Crop Subgroups that include poppy seeds), the MRL Database will only capture the MRL of 38 ppm as this will allow for the importation of treated poppy seeds (spices) as well as the use of azoxystrobin on poppy seeds for oilseed production.
