Re-evaluation Decision for Amitraz
Amitraz is an acaricide/insecticide registered for use as a slow release pet collar to control ticks on dogs. There is one domestic class end-use product containing amitraz for use in dog collars that is currently registered in Canada under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act. This re-evaluation decision pertains only to this use of amitraz (that is, the use of amitraz in dog collars).
Amitraz was also registered for control of Varroa mites in honey bee colonies in 2012. The risk assessment for that use is considered up to date and, thus, was not considered in the current re-evaluation.
After a re-evaluation of amitraz for use in pet collars, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, is cancelling the registration of the product for this use for sale and use in Canada. Label amendments listed in Appendix II, are required for the technical active ingredient.
Findings of the re-evaluation were first presented for public consultation in the Proposed Re-evaluation Decision PRVD2017-06, Amitraz,Footnote 1 whereas this Re-evaluation DecisionFootnote 2 summarizes the Agency’s final decision. No comments were received during the consultation process; therefore, the final decision is consistent with the proposed re-evaluation decision stated in PRVD2017-06. A reference list for all data used as the basis for the re-evaluation decision is also included in PRVD2017-06.
In addition, the registrant of the only end-use product, Preventic Tick Collar for Dogs (Registration Number 24496), has voluntarily discontinued this product as per the date listed below.
To comply with this decision the following timelines must be followed.
The last date of permitted use for the end-use product containing amitraz for pet collar use is 31 December 2019.
Updated label statements must be implemented on technical product labels no later than 24 months after the publication date of this decision document.
Any person may file a notice of objection regarding this decision on amitraz within 60 days from the date of publication of this Re-evaluation Decision. For more information regarding the basis for objecting (which must be based on scientific grounds), please refer to the Pesticides and Pest Management portion of the Canada.ca website Request a Reconsideration of Decision) or contact the PMRA Pest Management Information Service.
