Under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, all registered pesticides must be regularly re-evaluated by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to ensure that they continue to meet current health and environmental safety standards and continue to have value. The re-evaluation considers data and information from pesticide manufacturers, published scientific reports and other regulatory agencies. The PMRA applies internationally accepted risk assessment methods as well as current risk management approaches and policies.
Isopropyl alcohol is a hard-surface sanitizer for use in general household cleaning and sanitation, including sanitation of non-food and food contact surfaces such as countertops. It also controls mould and mildew on pre-cleaned hard non-porous surfaces (non-food use) such as bathroom tiles. Currently registered products containing these technical grade active ingredients are listed in Appendix I.
This document presents the final regulatory decisionFootnote 1 for the re-evaluation of isopropyl alcohol. All pest control products containing isopropyl alcohol that are registered in Canada are subject to this re-evaluation decision. This re-evaluation decision has gone through a 90-day consultation period as Proposed Re-evaluation Decision PRVD2017-09, Isopropyl Alcohol.Footnote 2
No comments were received during the consultation process. Therefore, this decision is consistent with the proposed re-evaluation decision stated in PRVD2017-09 that lists all data used as the basis for the re-evaluation decision.
Regulatory Decision for the Uses of Isopropyl alcohol
The PMRA has completed the re-evaluation for isopropyl alcohol. Under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, the PMRA has determined that continued registration of products containing isopropyl alcohol is acceptable. An evaluation of available scientific information found that the uses of isopropyl alcohol products meet current standards for protection of human health and the environment when used according to the label directions. No additional mitigation measures or label updates are required. No additional data are requested.
Any person may file a notice of objectionFootnote 3 regarding this decision on isopropyl alcohol within 60 days from the date of publication of this re-evaluation decision. For more information regarding the basis for objecting (which must be based on scientific grounds), please refer to the Pesticides and Pest Management section of Canada.ca (Request a Reconsideration of Decision) or contact the PMRA Pest Management Information Service.
