Background
Glucagon for injection is used for the emergency treatment of severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Glucagon for injection was previously marketed in Canada by Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. under the brand name GlucaGen/GlucaGen HypoKit, and by Eli Lilly Canada Inc. under the brand name Glucagon. Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk discontinued the sale of these drugs in 2023 and 2024 respectively, and all inventory has been fully depleted.
What we're doing
We recognize the importance of glucagon for injection for patients and we have taken steps to support its availability in Canada.
Beginning in May 2023, we allowed Amphastar Pharmaceuticals Inc. to import US-authorized Glucagon Injection. The company is permitted to do so until December 31, 2026. All imported foreign-authorized drugs can be sold until their expiry date and we are closely monitoring supply. For more information, visit the List of drugs for exceptional importation and sale.
Allowing the importation of foreign-authorized drugs is meant as a short-term measure to help mitigate the impacts of a shortage.
On June 10, 2026, Health Canada authorized Lupin Pharma Canada Limited's Glucagon for injection product. More information on the product can be found on Health Canada's Drug Product Database. A market launch date is not yet available.
We are communicating with patient and health care professional associations and provincial and territorial governments to share information about the supply of glucagon for injection.
