Advisory Council on Traditional Chinese Medicines
The Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) has changed its name to the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) subsequent to its recently expanded mandate to include the oversight of non-prescription and disinfectant drugs in addition to natural health products (NHPs). As an outcome of roundtable discussions, held in Vancouver and Toronto in the fall of 2011, Minister Aglukkaq called for the establishment of a single window for the TCM community to interact with Health Canada and bring their views forward.
This Advisory Council responds to that call, recognizes the unique characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicines and acknowledges the TCM community's concern about the appropriateness of the "western" medical model for Traditional Chinese Medicines.
The mandate of the Council is to provide advice on current and emerging issues related to Traditional Chinese Medicines, including the importation, sale, and use of Traditional Chinese Medicines in Canada; the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicines in Canada, noting that this is subject to provincial jurisdiction; and novel Traditional Chinese Medicines.
