The identification number issued to a chemical substance by the Chemical Abstracts Service Division of the American Chemical Society.
Any unique identifier that precisely identifies the pure substance (a chemical element, compound or mineral) such as a name in accepted scientific nomenclature or the number assigned by the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) or the technical name.
Confidential Business Information:
Any confidential information in respect of which a claim for exemption has been made. Hazard information on the material however, can not be claimed as confidential.
A person or entity who employs one or more employees.
Generic Chemical Identity (GCI):
The GCI is the generic chemical class or category that is no broader than necessary to protect the chemical identity which is the subject of the claim for exemption from disclosure.
Generic Name (of a controlled or hazardous product):
The name for a chemical class or family. For example, aromatic, cycloaliphatic and heterocyclic epoxies can be grouped together as epoxy resins. It is not a GCI.
Material Safety Data Sheet:
A document, as defined in subsection 11(1) of the
Hazardous Products Act (HPA) (before amendments were made in 2014), that provides basic information on a controlled material or chemical product. The document describes the properties and potential hazards of the material, how to use it safely, and what to do in an emergency. The purpose of this document includes the communication of the product’s hazards, how to use the product safely, and what to do if accidents occur.
Means, in respect of a hazardous product, the brand name, chemical name, common name, generic name or trade name (
Hazardous Products Regulations subsection 1(1)).
A claim for exemption filed by a claimant in respect of information relating to a controlled or hazardous product but does not include a refiled claim (
Hazardous Materials Information Review Regulations 2(1)).
A claim for exemption that is filed in respect of information relating to a controlled or hazardous product, that is filed by the claimant who filed the original claim relating to that product, and is solely in respect of any of the information, under subsection 19(2) of the
Hazardous Materials Information Review Act, that is or was previously exempt from disclosure in relation to that product (HMIRR 2(1)).
Safety Data Sheet:
A document that contains, under the headings that, by virtue of the regulations made under subsection 15(1) of the amended HPA, are required to appear in the document, information about a hazardous product, including information related to the hazards associated with any use, handling or storage of the hazardous product in a workplace.
A person who in the course of business, sells or imports a hazardous product as defined in the HPA (2015). The previous version of the HPA (before amendments were made in 2014) defined a supplier as a manufacturer, processor or packager of a controlled product or a person who, in the course of business, imports or sells controlled products.
