Executive Summary of the Food Expert Advisory Committee Meeting (FEAC) Webconference of Monday, April 28, 2104

Objective of the Meeting:

The eleventh meeting of the Food Expert Advisory Committee (FEAC), via webconference, was intended to provide FEAC members with updates on key food safety and nutrition files.

This report follows the order of the meeting agenda and is a summary of the information presented. The list of attendees is provided in Appendix A.

Introduction/Welcoming Remarks

Dr. Samuel Godefroy, Director General, Food Directorate (FD), Health Canada (HC), expressed appreciation for the work of FEAC members. He noted that the face-to-face meeting that was originally planned for June 3-4, 2014 had to be postponed due to a limited number of agenda items, and also to the expected need for targeted expert advice to be sought from FEAC members later during the year.

Update on Key FD Files, Budget 2014 and the Speech from the Throne

Dr. Samuel Godefroy provided updates on Key files including Labelling of Mechanically Tenderized Beef, Sodium Recommendations, Food Regulatory Modernization, Nutritional Labelling Consultation, Food Labelling Modernization Agenda and the Enhanced Integration with CFIA / Food Program. He also provided an update on the outcomes of Budget 2014 and the Speech of the Throne on Health Canada's Program Plans and Priorities.

Open Forum

Members requested additional information on various topics which included the progress in the transition of products previously marketed as Natural Health Products to the food regulatory framework, and the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS).

Closing Remarks

In closing, Dr. Samuel Godefroy, Director General, FD-HC, thanked members for their participation and mentioned that the next Meeting of the Food Expert Advisory Committee will be scheduled for November 17 &18, 2014 in Ottawa, Ontario.
