Contrary to common misconception, palliative care is not limited to end-of-life care provided by palliative specialists. It can be provided by a wide range of providers and caregivers at any stage of a serious illness - from diagnosis and even alongside treatments intended to cure the illness. Starting palliative care as early as possible helps your patients and their loved ones manage the illness on their terms, and puts patients' values, goals and beliefs at the forefront of their care. It can also support patients and caregivers who are grieving by providing emotional, social, spiritual and psychological support. Visit Canada.ca/palliative-care to learn more about practical resources you can use to help your patients live life to the fullest. |
