Enforcement: Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy

The Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy:

  • increases law enforcement's capacity to target the involvement of organized crime in making and distributing illegal drugs
  • enhances the capacity of the criminal justice system to investigate and prosecute offenders
  • identifies and controls new and dangerous psychoactive substances
  • reduces the possibility for controlled substances to be diverted from otherwise legal activities, such as from pharmacies

Enforcement activities under the Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy

We are providing funding and resources to law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice system to:

  • help prosecute offending organizations and individuals involved in making and distributing illegal drugs
  • give legal advice to law enforcement at the investigation stage
  • ensure accurate and timely analysis of suspected illegal drugs seized by law enforcement, to help support successful prosecutions
  • help border officers to prevent the cross-border movement of illegal drugs and the chemicals used to make them
  • help stop the flow of money organized crime makes from the illegal drug trade
  • improve the ability of Canadian law enforcement officials to conduct joint investigations with United States counterparts
  • evaluate the penalties for drug crimes as a part of a mandatory minimum penalty review
