Nutrition labelling - Table of reference amounts for food
Overview
Organization: Health Canada
Published on: October 18, 2024
Supersedes: November 24, 2022
Transitional Provisions: A prepackaged product can continue to be labeled according to the December 2016 version of this document until December 31, 2025, or according to the November 2022 version until December 31, 2027.
This document sets out reference amounts for different categories of foods.
Reference amounts:
- represent the amount of food typically consumed in one eating occasion;
- are used to determine what is considered to be a single-serving prepackaged product;
- serve as the basis for determining the serving size to be shown in the Nutrition Facts table of multiple-serving prepackaged products;
- serve as part of the criteria for making nutrient content claims and health claims; and
- factor into the requirements for the new front-of-package nutrition symbol.
In addition, this document provides instructions on how to determine and declare the serving size for each food.
The document, Nutrition Labelling - Table of Reference Amounts for Food is incorporated by reference in the Food and Drug Regulations. This Table is the most current version and was published October 18, 2024. Health Canada is providing industry until December 31, 2027 to implement these changes. A prepackaged product can continue to be labeled according to the December 2016 version of this document until December 31, 2025 or according to the November 2022 version until December 31, 2027.
The Table of Reference Amounts for Food is not meant to be an all-inclusive list of products that are available on the market for each product category. If you believe your food does not fit under one of the existing product categories, you may contact the Food and Nutrition Directorate at nut.labelling-etiquetage@hc-sc.gc.ca to discuss an appropriate reference amount for your product.
Stakeholders may submit proposals for modifications to the Table of Reference Amounts for Food by emailing nut.labelling-etiquetage@hc-sc.gc.ca. These proposals will be considered for future updates by the Food and Nutrition Directorate. The type of information required to accommodate such requests depends on the type of request. For example, a request to update to an existing reference amount would require consumption data to justify the change. However, if the request is to add a new food to the Table of Reference Amounts for Food, the following information can be provided to inform the requested change:
- a recommendation for a reasonable serving size;
- information on the intended/usual use of the food;
- label information from the same or similar foods currently on the market; and
- consumption data.
