Being smoke-free reduces your risk for chronic disease and contributes to overall wellbeing.
The risk of stroke is 2 to 4 times greater among smokers than those who never smoked. Smokers are up to 4 times more likely to have a sudden cardiac death than are non-smokers. And, people who are exposed to second-hand smoke are also at increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Services and supports are available to help people quit smoking. The pan-Canadian toll-free quit line offers trained specialists that can help you develop a quit smoking plan. You can reach these quit smoking specialists at 1-866-366-3667, or online at www.gosmokefree.gc.ca/quit.
