Applying as an adopted child or other relative being sponsored (sponsor applied before July 18, 2011)

Use this application package if a family member in Canada has:

  • agreed to sponsor you and
  • submitted a sponsorship application before July 18, 2011

If your family member submitted their application after July 18, 2011, use this application instead.

Only a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor you to immigrate to Canada.

To be sponsored using this application, you must be:

  • the sponsor’s:
    • child adopted outside Canada
    • child who will be adopted in Canada or
    • brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild who is
      • orphaned
      • under 18 years old and
      • not married or in a common-law relationship

or

  • related to the sponsor if the sponsor does not have any other relatives that
    • can be sponsored (such as a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, uncle or aunt, niece or nephew)
      • are Canadian citizens
      • are permanents residents
      • are registered Indians

Note: If you are a Canadian citizen adopting a child from another country, you may be able to apply for Canadian citizenship for your child right away. You do not have to apply for permanent residence for your child first. If you are an adult who was adopted by a Canadian citizen, you may apply for citizenship for yourself.

How to use this application package

Read the instruction guide to help you fill out your application.

Fill out, validate, print, sign and date your application forms.

To make sure you submit all the pages:

IMM 0008:

  1. Click the “Validate” button at the top or bottom of the form.

    Note: Validate the form before you print it. This will help make sure you have answered all the questions. It will help avoid delays in processing your application.

  2. A last page with barcodes and a signature line will automatically be created.
  3. Print, sign and date the form.
  4. For best results:
    • print on white, bond-quality, non-glossy paper
    • use a laser printer
  5. Place the barcode page on top of your package. If you have more than one package, place a separate barcode page on each one.

You must include the fee with your application. Find out how to pay your fees.

Mail your completed application to the correct Canadian visa office.
