An Initiative from The Prairie and Northern Regional Office Team
As part of the Public Service Renewal initiative, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency), more specifically the Prairie and Northern Regional Office team, has demonstrated its commitment to Canadians by taking an initiative that will allow additional transparency and enhance the Agency understanding of a project and its issues.
This initiative was implemented as part of the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir Project in Alberta. This project is proposed by the Government of Alberta (Alberta Transportation) and involves the construction of flood mitigation infrastructure on lands adjacent to the Elbow River, near Calgary. It is currently undergoing an environmental assessment. Public consultation is one of the many steps of an environmental assessment.
The Prairie and Northern Regional Office team established a federal technical advisory group made up of federal experts, Indigenous groups and municipal government representatives. This technical advisory group will advise the Agency on technical issues related to the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir Project. This is the first technical advisory group established in the Prairie and Northern Regional Office as well as a new step for the team.
The Prairie and Northern Regional Office took this initiative to address the need expressed by Indigenous groups involved in the project to be able to speak directly with federal government officials about this project. The Prairie and Northern Regional Office, through the implementation of this new measure, has been proactive and innovative in communicating directly with those who are most affected by this project.
