Researchers to evaluate policies and programs to determine impact on population health and health equity

April 27, 2016 – Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Institutes of Health Research

The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, today announced an investment of $3 million over two years for research on policies and programs to evaluate their impact on population health and health equity.

Organizations in the public, non-governmental and private sectors continually put in place policies and programs that can have an impact on health. For example, a community centre might create an after school sports program to promote physical activity among local youth. A provincial health agency might introduce new guidelines for cancer screening and want to understand who they are reaching or not. These interventions may be implemented without the capacity to gather evidence on how they work, for whom and under what circumstances.

To address this need for evidence, the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, supports population health intervention research – the science of solutions. The funding announced today will support 13 research projects that involve the evaluation of interventions across the country.

These projects include:

  • Researchers at the University of British Columbia will study the impact of speed limit changes in British Columbia on road safety.
  • Researchers at McMaster University will evaluate the effect of a neighborhood action strategy on reducing health inequalities in Hamilton.
  • Researchers at Université de Sherbrooke will examine age-friendly communities to identify the key components promoting good health and social participation in seniors.

Minister Philpott made the announcement at the Sparking Population Health Solutions Summit, hosted by the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health.

Quotes

"This research will support health policy makers, like me, in making smart, evidence-based decisions around population health and health equity. We can make the best use of our health care resources while promoting the health and safety of Canadians."

– The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health

"We are taking advantage of many naturally occurring policy and program experiments that are unfolding across the country in health and other sectors. Through this research, we can help better understand how these interventions are impacting health and health equity at a population level."

– Dr. Nancy Edwards, Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health
