Ministers provide an update to provinces and territories on bilateral relations with China

Ottawa, Ontario - February 8, 2019

Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade, held a conference call with representatives of the provinces and territories today to discuss Canada-China bilateral relations.

The two Ministers reiterated that Canada is deeply concerned by the arbitrary detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor and highlighted the international support Canada has received regarding these consular cases.

The Ministers reiterated the judicial process that Meng Wanzhou is facing is independent and free from political interference.

The Ministers highlighted the importance of Canada's commercial relationship with China.

The Ministers thanked the provincial and territorial governments for their support and collaboration. Federal, provincial, and territorial representatives agreed to continue to work together.

The Ministers also thanked the provinces and territories for their counsel and support throughout the negotiations of the new NAFTA.
