Investing in federal research facilities helps modernize important infrastructure, creates jobs and supports science, research and innovation vital to Canada’s long-term economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.

Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, today announced $1.8 million in funding for energy efficiency and infrastructure upgrades at the CanmetENERGY research centre in Varennes, Quebec. Upgrades include a building expansion, improvements to heating and cooling systems, security system enhancements and the installation of solar panels.

Funding for this investment was provided through Budget 2016, which allocated $140 million to support science, research and innovation — the pillars of strong and advanced economies — through improvements to federal laboratories and other federal assets.

CanmetENERGY is Canada’s leading research and technology organization in the field of clean energy. Approximately 110 federal scientists, engineers and staff at the CanmetENERGY facility in Varennes design and implement projects that support the cleaner production and use of energy resources.

CanmetENERGY scientists collaborate closely with industry, government and academic partners to support research and development in areas that include reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for transportation, technologies that reduce emissions and support sustainable fossil fuel development, and innovation in bioenergy.
