On October 24, 2010, Mrs. Jennifer McCrea qualified for maternity and parental benefits. While receiving parental benefits, she was diagnosed with cancer. She subsequently requested to switch to sickness benefits and was denied.

The Honourable Jean Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, together with Mrs. Jennifer McCrea, announced that the Federal Court has approved a settlement agreement to resolve a class action between the federal government and parents who, between 2002 and 2013, applied for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits while in receipt of EI parental benefits and were denied.
