Dartmouth, Nova Scotia – Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Seniors and Member of Parliament for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, Darren Fisher, on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Joyce Murray, along with Andy Smith, Deputy Commissioner for Shipbuilding and Materiel of the Canadian Coast Guard, and Gary Ivany, Assistant Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard Atlantic Region will dedicate to service the CCGS Capt Jacques Cartier at a dockside ceremony.
Icebreakers are an essential component of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) fleet, providing icebreaking services to ensure safe navigation, prevent ice jams and flooding, and maintain shipping routes. This is why the Canadian Coast Guard invested in three medium interim icebreakers to supplement the icebreaking fleet. These icebreakers were converted by Chantier Davie Shipyard, under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).

Campbell River, B.C. - Under the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada is working to reduce the number of vessels of concern in Canadian waters, and minimize their impact on coastal communities, the environment and the public. As part of its role under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessel Act, the Canadian Coast Guard is pleased to report that another ship has been removed and is currently being deconstructed so it is no longer a threat to the marine environment.
