After a thorough procurement and evaluation process, the BAE’s Type 26 design has been selected as the starting point for the design of the Royal Canadian Navy’s future warships, the Canadian Surface Combatants. Irving Shipbuilding Inc., the project’s prime contractor, awarded a sub-contract to Lockheed Martin Canada for work to finalize the design.

The Esquimalt Graving Dock is the only “open access” multi-user facility on the west coast of the Americas, and is located at the south end of Vancouver Island at Esquimalt Harbour, in the Greater Victoria region. The term “open access” describes a facility that provides common services (on a fee-for-service basis) and multi-user access to dry dock infrastructure for a variety of private sector companies. It is directly accessible from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which is the shipping channel to southern British Columbia and Puget Sound in the United States.

In December 2016, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) completed the second phase of the waterlot remediation project. In August 2015, PSPC awarded MNQM Contracting Ltd. a $26.4-million contract to carry out the work. The successful bidder was a partnership between the Malahat Nation and Quantum Murray. The total project cost for Phase 2 was $36.2 million.
