The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, supported by Catherine Stewart, Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change, and Steven Kuhn, Canada’s Chief Negotiator for Climate Change, and a strong team, met with colleagues from more than 190 countries in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, at a critical time as countries are being devastated by climate events such as historic flooding, as well as rising energy and food crises due to geopolitical instability.

As the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) winds up, Canada is urging the international community to continue collaborating to address the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Today at COP27, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced that Canada is investing up to $855,000 to help the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society coordinate a collective of over fifty civil society organizations and Indigenous partners at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15), taking place in Montréal in December 2022. The funding will support civil society’s participation in the lead up to the Nature COP and facilitate many important events that will be accessible to the general public.

Pricing pollution is widely recognized as the most efficient way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive clean innovation. Carbon pricing works by putting a cost on the thing we don’t want—pollution—and adding value to the things we do want—clean air, reliable and affordable clean energy, and sustainable jobs—while providing flexibility for consumers and industries to find the lowest-cost solutions. Last year, at COP26, Prime Minister Trudeau issued a challenge to triple the global coverage of carbon pricing by 2030.
