TORONTO, Ontario - Julie Gascon, Assistant Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard’s Central and Arctic Region was joined by Rear Admiral Joanna Nunan, Commander, United States Coast Guard Ninth District to sign the updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between their agencies concerning Coast Guard icebreaking services in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway maritime transportation system.
GANDER, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR – The Government of Canada is taking action to protect the marine environment from spills and the threat of pollution. The Oceans Protection Plan is a $1.5 billion investment that is going towards further protecting our coasts and waters, and the recently proposed Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act will help address risks posed by problem vessels to safe navigation, the marine environment, public health and local economies.
OLD PERLICAN, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR – Today, Churence Rogers, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity announced on behalf of the honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, that a new Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboat Station will be built at Old Perlican to allow for better response to marine emergencies on the east coast of Newfoundland.

Québec (Quebec) - The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) will close its Cap-aux-Meules seasonal search and rescue base on December 30th. Note that those of Quebec City, Tadoussac, Kegaska, Rivière-au-Renard and Havre-Saint-Pierre closed on November 30th.
