Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, launched the Net-Zero Advisory Body, an independent group of 14 experts from across the country, who will provide the Government of Canada with advice on the best pathways to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Advisory Body is a key part of the proposed Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act tabled in the House of Commons last fall, which would enshrine Canada’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 into law.


Government of Canada review of fuel efficiency standards confirms the economic and environmental benefits of ambitious action

Canada is taking action to cut pollution from the transportation sector, which accounts for one-quarter of our overall emissions. By requiring light-duty vehicles (LDV) to be less polluting over time, Canada’s fuel efficiency standards have the potential to cut fuel costs in Canada, and to create good jobs in the automotive sector by encouraging the adoption of cleaner vehicles.


Government of Canada announces support for Manitoba energy-efficiency programs

Today, the Special Representative for the Prairies, the Honourable Jim Carr, on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, announced approximately $32.3 million from the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund to support natural-gas programs offered by Efficiency Manitoba, a new Crown corporation established by the Government of Manitoba. These programs will reduce natural-gas use and greenhouse gas emissions by offering rebates and incentives for energy-efficient equipment and retrofit measures. The Province of Manitoba is also contributing about $32.3 million to this project through Efficiency Manitoba.


Government of Canada announces support for Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation’s solar-energy project

Today, the Member of Parliament for Oakville North–Burlington and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services, Pam Damoff, on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, joined the Chief Executive Officer and President of Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, Matt Jamieson, to announce approximately $349,000 in funding from the Low Carbon Economy Fund.


Quebec cargo-handling company sentenced to pay $675,000 for Fisheries Act violation

On January 21, 2021, the Compagnie d’Arrimage de Québec Ltée pleaded guilty in the Court of Quebec in the District of Québec to one count of contravening the Fisheries Act. The company was fined $100,000. In addition to the fine, the Court ordered the company to pay an amount of $575,000. These amounts will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund. As a result of this conviction, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry.
