Federal Investment Enables Halifax Child and Youth Advocacy Centre to Expand Services for Young Victims and their Families

Today, Minister of Justice Peter MacKay announced $339,000 to support an expansion of the services currently being offered by the Sea Star Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC) operating out of the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Minister made the announcement while delivering the opening remarks at the 2014 SeaStar Child and Youth Advocacy Centre Conference. The keynote address for the conference was delivered by Sheldon Kennedy, a prominent advocate for child victims of abuse.


Federal Government supports program to assist at-risk youth in Toronto

Today, Justice Minister Peter MacKay announced $499,805 in funding to the Agincourt Community Services Association. The funding will help the organization develop and deliver a series of workshops to assist youth in learning new skills and coping mechanisms to increase their resiliency in the face of negative peer influences and decrease their involvement with the criminal justice system.

Federal Victims Strategy and Victims Fund

The Federal Victims Strategy was created in 2007 and made permanent in 2011. The objective of the Strategy, which is led by the Department of Justice Canada, is to give victims a more effective voice in the criminal justice system. The Department of Justice works in close collaboration with other federal institutions, as well as victims, victim advocates, provincial and territorial governments, service providers, and others involved in the criminal justice system. The Department of Justice develops policy and criminal law reform, funds various programs to meet the needs of victims of crime, explores best practices to address victims' needs, and raises awareness about the concerns of victims of crime and their role in the criminal justice system.
