The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today issued the following statement:
"Fisheries and Oceans Canada is very disappointed with reports that Greenland has changed its domestic policy on wild Atlantic salmon harvests, which could potentially exceed the internationally accepted limit by 35 tonnes.
On the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, issued the following statement about the June 8th celebration:
Our government commends the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the Fur Institute of Canada and other Inuit and industry groups for bringing this challenge forward to the European General Court to defend an important, traditional, sustainable and humane Northern harvest
As has been made clear for several months, the Federal Government has been leading negotiations with third parties in order to secure a new operator for the Experimental Lakes Area.
"I am deeply saddened by the news that two dedicated volunteer members of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue team have lost their lives at sea.
On February 2nd, 2012, all Members of Parliament in the House of Commons will have an opportunity to support Canada's northern and coastal communities.
