OTTAWA (November 2, 2006) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, today announced the re-appointment of Dr. Robert Sheldon for a second three-year term to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Governing Council.
"The CIHR's Governing Council will greatly benefit from the expertise and health background that Dr. Sheldon brings to the Council," said Minister Clement. "His previous work with the CIHR and his experience within the university and health research communities will contribute to meeting CIHR's mandate of improving the health of Canadians."
Dr. Sheldon was originally appointed to the Governing Council in 2003. Prior to this appointment, he served as a member on the CIHR SCOGAC. He has been a professor of medicine since 1997 and is now Vice President Research, Calgary Health Region, and Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the University of Calgary. Dr. Sheldon is known internationally for his seminal studies on the diagnosis, natural history and treatment of vasovagal syncope, a common condition that results in fainting or a blackout. Having already undertaken the leadership role as the Chair of the CIHR Standing Committee on Performance Evaluation and Audit, Dr. Sheldon will continue to be a valuable and contributing member of the Governing Council.
