Saint-Georges, Quebec, April 15, 2009 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, accompanied by his colleague the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Member of Parliament for Beauce, today announced a relaxing of the terms of the Major Economic and Tourism Facilities funding measure. These changes, which come into effect immediately, will make it possible to fund a greater number of large-scale projects that have the potential to generate significant spinoffs for the regions of Quebec.
“Our government’s Economic Action Plan includes a number of measures designed to help Quebec enterprises and communities better weather the current economic storm. We are making every effort to strengthen the economy, stimulate growth and create more jobs. The decision by Canada Economic Development to relax its Major Economic and Tourism Facilities funding measure reflects the coherence of our government’s action. With this enhanced flexibility, we will be able to better support the development of facilities that foster the economic diversification of Quebec communities,” explained the Minister of State.
Several of the funding measure’s components, until now restricted to certain targeted regions, will now be open to the province as a whole. Moreover, projects funded by other federal programs will now also be eligible to apply for assistance under the Major Economic and Tourism Facilities measure.
“These changes answer the needs expressed to me during my visits to the regions in January and February. It is our hope that they will facilitate the emergence of new projects to develop facilities that will promote the economic growth of communities and enhance Quebec’s tourism offering,” Minister Lebel concluded.
