Ottawa, December 18, 2013—The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), today announced the appointment of Dr. Jack M. Mintz as Vice-President of the SSHRC Governing Council.
"Dr. Mintz is a world-renowned economist, academic and public policy analyst with extensive knowledge of fiscal and tax policy," said Minister Moore. "As a member of the Council, he has made a valuable contribution to social science research in Canada, and I look forward to his continued support in advancing the Council's work."
"Dr. Mintz's innovative ideas and exceptional leadership will prove to be significant assets to the Council as it continues to promote and support research in the social sciences and humanities for the benefit of Canadians and our country's long-term prosperity," added the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology).
Since 2008, Dr. Mintz has held the position of Palmer Chair in Public Policy and Director of the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. He previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the C.D. Howe Institute and Clifford Clark Visiting Economist at the Department of Finance Canada.
As a foremost tax expert, Dr. Mintz has published widely on public economics and fiscal federalism, and he is a respected board member of several noteworthy councils and companies, including Imperial Oil Limited and Morneau Shepell.
Dr. Mintz holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics from the University of Alberta, a Master of Arts in Economics from Queen's University and a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Essex in England.
