The Harper Government is committed to investing in innovative clean technologies that create high-quality jobs, generate new economic opportunities and protect the environment.
Through the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII), our Government is investing over $4.1 million to support the British Columbia Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project.
The project supports a market transformation toward the efficient use of clean energy in the transportation sector in British Columbia by addressing barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles have a limited driving range of about 100 to 140 kilometres before requiring recharging. The British Columbia Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project will support the installation and operation of approximately 300 charging stations for public use in urban areas across the province and 30 fast-charging stations along major transportation corridors.
When electric vehicles begin to appear in large numbers, there will be a need for grid and resource management of charging station infrastructure. This project will also provide for the installation and operation of an “EV-Cloud” data acquisition, data evaluation and control system for the charging station infrastructure.
Light-duty vehicles account for 15 percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in British Columbia. BC Hydro’s Electric Vehicle Smart Infrastructure Project efficiently uses B.C.’s electricity (93 percent of which is produced from clean and renewable resources) to electrify vehicles. The project will directly reduce CO2 emissions (the most prevalent of the greenhouse gases), improve urban air quality, support technology innovation and create new business opportunities.
