July 3, 2014 - Petawawa, Ontario
PETAWAWA, Ont. - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence, today welcomed the final CH-147F Chinook heavy-lift helicopter being delivered to the Canadian Armed Forces’ at Garrison Petawawa.
The CH-147F Chinook is an advanced cutting-edge, multi-mission, medium-to-heavy-lift helicopter. It is frequently used to transport equipment and personnel during operations at home and abroad, and it can also respond to emergencies such as fire, floods, and earthquakes. The 15 Chinook helicopters which Canada has acquired provide our Armed Forces with an unparalleled capability to respond rapidly to emergencies in Canada, or overseas.
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has made unprecedented investments to rebuild the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). The defence budget has grown by over 27 per cent to ensure that Canada's men and women in uniform have the tools needed to succeed. This procurement project has remained both on time and within budget since the contract was signed with Boeing in 2009. The entire fleet of 15 Canadian CH-147F Chinooks was delivered over the course of one year.
As part of the Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopter Acquisition Program, Boeing has committed to providing Industrial and Regional Benefits equal to US$1.25 billion for the acquisition and US$1.7 billion related to in-service support, which will ensure significant benefits for Canadian industry from this procurement.
