Backgrounder: New transit projects across Alberta

Backgrounder

Total investment of more than $500 million

The Public Transit Infrastructure Fund

The governments of Canada and Alberta have approved a new list of transit projects under the new Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), which is designed to address key infrastructure priorities with a focus on repairing and upgrading existing facilities and assets.

The Government of Canada is providing the Government of Alberta with $347,190,000 under PTIF, and will fund up to 50 per cent of the eligible project costs. The Government of Alberta and municipalities will fund the balance.

As part of the bilateral agreement between Canada and Alberta, the following projects have now been approved for federal funding amounting to more than $132.9 million, while the province is investing more than $79.4 million through the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP). Municipalities are contributing the balance of $58 million.

These projects are in addition to the 49 PTIF projects announced for Alberta on September 1, 2016.
