Better wastewater infrastructure for Orillia residents

News Release

74 new projects approved in 37 communities

Orillia, Ontario, June 16, 2017—The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while also laying the foundation for new economic opportunities to strengthen the middle class across the province.

Marc Miller, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Ann Hoggarth, Member of Provincial Parliament for Barrie, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, and His Worship Steve Clarke, Mayor of the City of Orillia, today announced that a new project in Orillia has been approved under the Government of Canada’s Clean Water and Wastewater Fund. The federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for this project—over $1.4 million. The provincial government is providing up to 25 per cent of funding for this project—over $700,000 of total eligible costs, and the City of Orillia will fund the remaining costs of the project.

Thanks to this investment, residents of Orillia will benefit from upgrades to the wastewater treatment centre including the design and construction of a new cloth media tertiary filtration process, complete with a hydraulic lift station, cloth media filters and buildings to house the individual processes. Tertiary treatment and process optimization at the wastewater treatment center are required to ensure the city meets its new compliance limits for phosphorus entering Lake Simcoe. This project is essential to keeping our waterways clean and our communities healthy and livable.

In addition to these projects, over $14 million in federal funding and over $7 million in provincial funding for 73 water and wastewater projects will benefit 36 other communities across Ontario.

This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.
